Story:
On October 31, 2026, I hiked with my wife near Amicalola Falls in North Georgia, along the Appalachian Approach Trail and the Len Foote Hike Inn Trail. It was a sunny day, with fall colors in full display and wind rustling through the upper crowns of the forest.
Along the way, I kept noticing the unmistakable smell of cooked shrimp. It seemed so out of place that I hesitated to acknowledge it until my wife confirmed that she smelled it too. We later learned about the shrimp mushroom, Russula xerampelina, whose distinctive odor offered a possible explanation about the scent accompanying our hike.
Wintry morning sun
Caresses holly berries
feasting birds sing out

Noon Sun bathes a road
Hugged by snow and bitter cold
In silence we walk

The ice-glazed branches
Sway in the wintry wind and
Sing a crackling song

A cyclist pedals
With the Sun in his eyes and
The wind in his hair.
